November 12, 2005

The youth of St. John's held its fourth youth service on November 12. It was an amazing evening filled with music, drama, and the presence of God. The service was based on the message of "Who You Are When No One's Looking." This idea came for the Bill Hybels book of the same title. The service revolved around the question of What are the different masks that you put on in different situations?

Our drama presentation and same amusing videos displayed some of the "masks" we put on and what you do when you THINK no one is looking. Like our nose pick or batman videos.

The worship band filled the night with great music, which included the new addition of a saxophone. the songs being led included: Everyday, Trading my Sorrows, Persuade Me, MyGlorious, All I want is You, Light the Fire, Not to Us, Cry in my Heart, Just as I am, Evermore, and Get Down.

Scriptures used in the service were: Psalms 139:7-10, Proverbs 3:5-6, Isaiah 40:31, Matthew 6:24, John 16:33, Corinthians 10:17-18 and 11:30-31.

The second installment of the St. John's Youth Service brought out even more craziness and intense forms of worship and learning. The February service used all the great components of the first service while also adding in new stuff into the mix. The message of the night was "Be the Centre". The question of "what is the centre of our lives?" was confronted in a variety of ways and forms. We based parts of the service on Max Lucado's book "It's Not About Me". If you liked the message of the service and would like to read up on it some more, check this book out!

The worship band was as powerful as ever as they led: Everyday, Did you feel the Mountains Tremble, Open the Eyes, Enough, Holiness, Jesus Lover of My Soul, I Lift my Eyes Up, Your Love is Deep, and Famous One. The mixed video and live drama helped drive home the message of "It's Not about Me". The conclusion of the drama can be viewed here.

Bible passages used include: Psalm 95, Hebrews 11, Ephesians 1:20-22 (MSG), and Phillipians 2:5-8 (MSG). There were also testimonies, responsive readings, and prayers throughout the night.

Our first service was on November 20th 2004 at 7:00 PM . It was a BLAST! Check out the video right here. And download the order of service.

The theme for the service was Purpose. We joined in worship with the songs: Deeper, Everyday, Shelter, You Are my Rock, Trading my Sorrows, In the Secret, Take My Life, Be Thou my Vision and My Glorious. Our video drama was based on the idea of finding God’s will in ministry and finding purpose in God within a hectic teenage life. The drama ended with a hilarious improvised skit that summed up the message in a barrel of laughs…

Key scriptures that we used were Romans 12:2-3 (MSG) and Proverbs 3:5 (NIV), as well as the Old Testament story of Gideon which can be found in Judges 6-7. The message of the service was based on parts of the book "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren. If you are looking to expand your faith through reading, but don't know where to start, try this book. It uses over 1200 scripture references and has a powerful message.

The service also included invitations of prayer, responsive readings, teaching by our minister at St. John’s (Don Gibson) and testimonials by youth from the church.
