History of St. John'sIn the heart of Oakville Since 1832. In the 1790's American Methodists, known as circuit riders, began preaching in Upper Canada. They returned home at the outbreak of the War of 1812. Oakville Methodists then turned to the Wesleyan Church (British). In 1832 a local circuit, the Nelson, was formed and Wesleyan Methodist Church began. The present brick church, of late Victorian Gothic design, was dedicated on January 13,1878 and the total cost was subscribed that day. Lusk Hall was added in 1923 as a Sunday School building. On June 10,1925, the United Church of Canada was inaugurated. It united Methodist, Congregationalist and Presbyterian followers. The first service in St. John's United Church was held June 14,1925. The Carillon Tower and Memorial Garden were dedicated in 1986. Since 1832, through wars and peace, depressions, recessions, prosperity and great community growth, St. John's has met the needs of thousands.
